Bernoulli Blower

Bernoulli Blower
Float a beachball in midair and make it float to the side!

Objectives:
  • Float a beachball in midair and have it float to the side.
  • Understand Bernoulli's principle and how it affects air movement and airplanes flying.

Experiment Details:
  • Type: Air Pressure/Bernoulli's Principle
  • Grades 5-8
  • Difficulty of Project: Easy (Level 1)
  • Cost of Completing Project: $20
  • Approximate Time: Less than 5 minutes

What You'll Need
See Video Below!
  • Beach Ball
  • Blowdryer or Leaf Blower

Step-By-Step Procedure
step-1
STEP 1:
Turn on a blowdryer or leafblower and hold it straight up (with the air blowing toward the ceiling) and get ready to place a beach ball straight on top of the air flow.
step-1
step-2
STEP 2:
Place beach ball directly on top of air flow and watch it float.
step-2
step-3
STEP 3:
SLOWLY tilt the blower sideways and watch the beachball float in midair...on the side!
step-3
step-4
STEP 4:
Play "Bernoulli Basketball" and float the ball into a basket or garbage can or out a window. Be careful!
step-4
Observation & Conclusion
Drop the beach ball on top of the air stream coming out of the leaf blower or blow dryer. SLOWLY tilt the blower to the side and you'll observe the beach ball floating a few feet away and to the side!
Science Fair Questions
1. Does it matter what size beach ball you use?

2. Would different object float?

3. Why doesn't the beach ball blow away when blown to the side?
